United Way Reading Buddies

Supporting literacy region-wide.

The United Way Reading Buddies program supports literacy by providing 1st and 2nd grade children with stuffed animals to serve as non-judgemental "Buddies" to help them practice reading. Students spend at least 15 minutes a day reading with their Buddies.

Since 2003, businesses, churches, book clubs, boards, schools and other organizations have run stuffed animal drives to support the Reading Buddies program.

Each fall, more than 3,900 stuffed animals are delivered to 160 1st and 2nd grade classrooms.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate! For as little as $5, you can put a Reading Buddy in the classroom. Support a whole classroom for $150.
  • Host a collection drive for new stuffed animals (approximately 12”- 16” tall).
  • Volunteer to prepare stuffed animals for delivery to schools in the fall.
