A Humbling Experience

Women United Member Katie

Recovering from addiction can be a long road. This is why Recovery Connection and Women United Porter County have teamed up to provide life skills classes and social events for people going through recovery. Classes provide opportunities for participants to learn, express themselves, and build a support system. Women United members host classes with a different topic each week.

Katie recently hosted a class that allowed attendees to exercise their creativity and go home with something they made themselves. “[The participants] all painted a pine board and selected a word that meant something to them. Joy, laugh, forgive, meditate, learn, radiate, fearless… I loved hearing them say why they chose their words. It was humbling to get to do that with those ladies,” Katie said.

In addition to providing an activity, Recovery Connection classes offer a safe space to interact with peers. Having a strong community can make all the difference during recovery. “The 16 ladies that attended had a fantastic time,” Katie mentioned. “They were all helping each other and encouraging one another.”

Katie also noted some attendees were excited to hear about future classes: “When [AmeriCorps member] Mackenzie told the ladies that next week was about finances and credit I heard a few of them comment how much they needed help with that!”

Women United is thrilled to be working with Recovery Connection to offer these classes. Members are dedicated to sharing their time and talent and letting people in recovery know that they are not alone. Classes run through the end of the year and will continue to offer varied activities and lessons.
