Who is ALICE?

You might know her

Members of the ALICE population don't live in Wonderland, but they are still forced to make challenging decisions every single day, just like that Alice of legend. ALICE is an acronym for Asset-Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. It refers to those members of our communities who are employed above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), but still do not earn enough to afford basic necessities.

ALICE families and individuals are often forced to make decisions between things like paying for adequate car insurance coverage or paying the rent, or even between filling a prescription drug and paying the utilities bill. Things that others may consider normal, like going out to eat, to the movies or on vacation, are luxuries for the ALICE population.

In Porter County, 22% of our 62,986 households are ALICE and 9% live below the poverty line.

United Way of Porter County has been participating in the United For ALICE network since 2015 and leading the support network for the ALICE population right here at home for more than 60 years.

Along with our community and corporate partners, we are working to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. To start participating, donate now.

The United For ALICE network began in Morris County, New Jersey in 2009. Since then, the project has spread to 18 states and includes 540 United Ways. Reports are available for each participating state and can be broken down to the county level. The project was created to stimulate meaningful discussion, attract new partners, and ultimately inform strategies for positive change.
