Turning Passion into Action
RSVP Volunteer Steve
Helping people inspires RSVP volunteer Steve.
Steve has served with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program through United Way of Porter County for the past two and a half years, where he has volunteered his time to both the Hilltop Neighborhood House and Porter Regional Hospital. Steve, who retired about two years ago, says that he initially started volunteering as something to do during retirement. Soon after, he developed a passion to help others.
When Steve decided to volunteer, he contacted United Way and expressed his interest in helping others. RSVP helped pair Steve with Hilltop Neighborhood House, a preschool in Valparaiso. Steve was motivated to tackle this volunteer assignment because he believes the younger generation learns from the older generation. He loves working with Hilltop Neighborhood House and says that working alongside children has been an overall gratifying and fun experience. “I do pretty much whatever they need me to do,” says Steve.
When asked if he had any advice or words of encouragement to those who are thinking about volunteering, Steve said: “If you are economically able to volunteer, do it.” Steve had a passion, and United Way had the resources that he needed to put those passions into action.
