Mortgage, Rent and Utility Assistance

Because your home is important and we want to help you keep it. Resources are open to all Northwest Indiana residents, some restrictions may apply. For additional resources, call 211.

Indiana Hardest Hit Fund: Helps homeowners who have fallen behind on mortgage payments due to involuntary hardships. The fund provides up to $30,000 mortgage assistance loans for qualifying homeowners. To start an application, go to or call 219.262.0048.

Indiana Emergency Rental Assistance Program: Provides qualified renters with rent, utilities and internet assistance. Must be a COVID-19 related hardship. Assistance is available for up to 12 months. Catholic Charities Rental Assistance Program: Assists with rent and utility payments. Serves Porter, Lake, LaPorte, and Starke counties. Learn more at

Low-income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) Program: Helps pay electric and heating bills. Applicants must fall within 150% of the federal poverty guidelines to receive assistance. Assistance provided through May 14, 2021. Learn more at

NIPSCO Hardship Program: Customers between 151-250% of the federal poverty level can receive up to $400 in gas bill assistance. Hardship funds are available through May 31, 2021 or until funds are exhausted. Learn more at or by calling 800.464.7726.
