United Way Field Day and Picnic this Saturday, July 16

Valparaiso, IN – United Way of Porter County Young Leaders United invites the community to join them on Saturday, July 16 for a day of family fun and food at the inaugural United Way Field Day and Picnic.

The event was created based on feedback from United Way of Porter County 2015 Let’s Talk community conversations that there was a need for more affordable family fun activities in Porter County.

“We’re proud of our Young Leaders for taking the lead to address a community aspiration,” said Kim Olesker, president & CEO of United Way of Porter County. “Many of them know from experience how expensive family fun activities can be and wanted to help meet that need, especially for young struggling families.”

Attendees will be treated to field day classics such as tug-of-war, obstacle courses and relays. The event will have more than 20 activities including crafts, puppy kissing booth, pet adoption area, pony rides and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic lunch. Free popcorn and other food for purchase by Valpo Viennas and Culver’s of Valparaiso will be available.

Participating nonprofits include Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County, Dunebrook, Frontline Foundations, Housing Opportunities, Lakeshore PAWS, Mental Health America of Porter County, Opportunity Enterprises, NorthShore Health Centers and Visiting Nurses Association of Northwest Indiana.

Event sponsors include 1st Source Bank, Barre & Beyond, Burke Costanza & Carberry LLP, Coastal Valley Water, Heritage Barn, McAfee Animal Hospital, Lil’ Wranglers, Meridian Title, Metro Recycling, Porter County Sheriff’s Office and Wayne Enterprises.

Young Leaders United is a young professional network group of more than 100 individuals dedicated to giving back to their community. The program is sponsored by NITCO.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm County Park in Valparaiso. Children are free. Adults are $5. Participating nonprofits are offering an admission coupon to help defer attendance cost. Entry fee and a portion of food sales will be donated to United Way of Porter County to support families in need.
