Education

Valerie’s story…

“The Duneland YMCA Child Care Sponsorship we received is a blessing. We wouldn’t be able to send our children, Bianca and Leo, there without it.  My husband is a student, and we are both working.  If our kids didn’t have nurturing, comfortable child care, I don’t know how we would make it through this transition.

So many things seem economically out of reach for people these days.  Money is tight.  It’s rough when a broken dryer or a flat tire can set you back a month.  But knowing that the kids are in a good place gives us the peace of mind to keep going.  We know that giving them a good start is one of the most important things we can do.

Today, we are helped.  Someday soon, we want to be the helpers.  The generosity of people in Porter County inspires us to feel we can make it, and eventually give back to help someone else make it.”

United Way helps Valerie’s family and others by funding educational programs at Partner Agencies like the Duneland YMCA Child Care Sponsorship Program.

Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. But with more than 1.2 million children dropping out each year, America faces an education crisis. These trends are reversible, but only when communities and public, private and nonprofit sectors work together. Valerie's story is just one example of how the United Way is dedicated to education in our community.
