"Helping agencies who are helping neighbors in need"

You can make a difference in the lives of the homeless

The homeless situation in Porter County is not portrayed by the images most people have of the homeless seen in big cities.

In Porter County, we refer to the “invisible” homeless because they are usually families with children who upon losing their homes, rely on the temporary assistance of family and friends. They occupy space on couches and spare rooms. Often, families are split-up in order to lesson the burden on their hosts, but it negatively impacts the “family.”

More than 1,000 homeless families sought assistance in Porter County in 2007. The need is growing and the organizations addressing this need face increasing challenges to help our communities’ neighbors.

The Porter County Walk for the Homeless is a great way to help these agencies.

Participating Agencies

Alice's is a 24-hour, staffed, safe 12-step residential center where personal plans for each woman are designed to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the disease of chemical dependency. Structure and supervision are the keys to successful transition from a life of addiction to a life of sobriety. Alice's women attend meditation in the morning, participate in at least 5 Alcoholics' Anonymous and/or Narcotics' Anonymous meetings each week, share family meals, have a job, attend life skills classes and individual counseling.

Before leaving each woman designs an Exit Plan which outlines her aftercare when she leaves Alice's.

Christian Community Action’s Spring Valley Shelter provides programs to help our clients build better futures. The 28-apartment complex in Valparaiso, serves more than 100 families from all across Porter County. During average 2-3 month stay, adults are counseled in financial management, family/couple counseling, life skill development and job skill improvement. School-aged and younger children, which make up more than half of the annual residents, are provided tutoring, enrichment and are able to remain in their home school to allow continuity in their lives.

Spring Valley allows an entire family to stay together and heal together as mothers, fathers and children can all reside in their own apartment. Each member of the household can receive assistance and counseling to build a solid foundation for a better future.

Moraine House is a home to 13 residents in various stages of recovery. The treatment program is recommended for 180 days. Residents adhere to all House rules and regulations, attend AA and NA meetings at least 3 times per week, participate in Recovery Dynamics program, Back-to-Basics programs, meet the Bridge Gap Committee wihc reviews the residents progress each week, seek employment and finds an AA/NA sponsor in the Valparaiso-area.

Founded in 1976, as a halfway house for recovering alcoholics in Porter County, Moraine House today serves people recovering from all chemical dependencies from several counties in the Region.

Corporate Sponsorship
Corporate Sponsorship provides the funding to host the Porter County Walk for the Homeless. The Walk allows the three participating agencies to raise awareness of the homelessness situation and the role each plays in addressing the issues. The Walk also provides the opportunity for individuals to assist with raising funds to help the agencies help our neighbors in need.

In addition, organizations participating with Corporate Sponsorship receive recognition before, during and after the event.
