Scouting - A Family Success Story

The Nault family is a typical Scouting family that enjoys the outdoors and the diverse activities and opportunities that Scouting offers. The boys, Kevin and Adam, have learned to "Do your best", while applying the values of the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The Scouting advancement program has provided opportunities for them to practice their faith, to serve others, to follow, to lead, to teach others, and to explore their different paths and interests on the trail to Eagle. With a little encouragement, both Kevin and Adam will achieve the rank of Eagle Scout while doing things together, as a family.

Doing things together, as a family, is important to the Naults. Kevin has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic, degenerative disease that affects the voluntary muscles. It produces a generalized weakness of muscle affecting the muscles of the hips, pelvis, thighs, and shoulders. It eventually affects all of the voluntary muscles, the heart and breathing muscles.

In June of 2005, with help of two dozen scouts and family members, Kevin completed his Eagle Scout Leadership service project at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Heron Rookery in Pine Township. The group built a 40-foot boardwalk over a flood-prone portion of the trail that meanders through the rookery along the Little Calumet River. Kevin directed the group from his motorized wheel chair.

Kevin has achieved a lot in his 16 years. As a Cub Scout he earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting's highest award. He has also earned religious awards for his faith, the Parvuli Dei as Cub Scout and the Ad Altare Dei as a Boy Scout. Following the approval of Eagle Scout application and successful completion of an Eagle Board of Review, Kevin will be eligible to receive Scouting's highest honor, the Eagle Scout award. Fewer than 4% of all Boy Scouts earn the Eagle rank.

Kevin is the embodiment of the Scout Spirit. By his example, other Scouts and Scouters learn the true meaning of Scout Spirit: to maintain a cheerful spirit and "to help other people at all times". On outings, the Scout Law comes alive as Kevin and his fellow Scouts demonstrate by word and deed that a Scout is loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, cheerful, brave, and reverent. Scouting works for the Naults, for Troop 928, for the community, and for the nation.

The values-based programs of the Boy Scouts of America offer young people responsible fun and adventure, while training them in citizenship, service, and leadership. Scouting prepares young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Success at St. Agnes Adult Day Care

Bart was born in 1920. He always led an active life, sometimes working three jobs to make ends meet and to care for his wife and children. After his wife died, he attended St. Agnes for the socialization. Then he fell and broke his hip and was in a rehabilitation facility for 10 weeks. Now at 83, he does not drive, has failing eyesight, and needs a walker to get around. He no longer could stay alone all day by himself. He attends St. Agnes five days a week, while his daughters work.

Like a lot of seniors, he is on a fixed income and would not be able to afford going to St. Agnes five days a week without the help of the scholarship program, funded by United Way donations.

The family says that it has worked out wonderfully. "The people there are very caring and having him there every weekday has been a blessing for our family. We have peace of mind knowing that our Dad is well cared for and is happy."
