VALPARAISO | Colin Stewart, from Lakeshore Area Regional Recovery of Indiana, and his crew – volunteers from St. Teresa’s – hauled 80 pound bags of cement mix off the back of a flatbed truck. Other workers, clad in respirator masks, carried pieces of black-mold covered dry wall from the interior of a home in the 700 block of Albert Street in Valparaiso. It was a part of the third annual United Way Regional Day of Caring which took place Friday in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. This year, 109 teams of volunteers worked at various sites to complete projects for 48 organizations throughout Northwest Indiana. One of these sites was the home on Albert Street that Stewart said had been damaged two years in the floods of 2008. “We’re putting in drain tile and removing the dry wall which had water four feet up. It was just like a sponge and there is now black mold. The home is owned by an elderly lady who is coming back from a nursing home next week, her daughter, and multiple children and now it will be a whole lot healthier for them,” said Stewart. Kathy Jackson, of St. Teresa’s, said the eight volunteers they brought [...]

The United Way Day of Caring 2010 kicked off this morning with a fantastic breakfast provided by Strongbow. “Each year, people come out and give of themselves,” stated United Way of Porter County President Sharon Kish. This year’s theme, “Raise the Bar in 2010,” proved true, as over 40 teams volunteered their time to help someone else, with the total impact amounting to $250,000 of volunteer labor in one day, between Porter and Lake Counties. The Day of Caring began in 2004, with Chicago Title, Tri Kappa, the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis, and Aspen Photography being some of the first businesses to give their time and participate in helping others. New teams this year include the MOMS Club of Valparaiso, Opportunity Enterprises, Kouts Christian Church, Valparaiso Alliance Club, and One Accord Ministry. Teams were recognized during the breakfast, as a party ofFather Kevin McCarthy’s efforts to pump up the volunteers. He led the volunteers in a variety of cheers, creating an energy and light-hearted spirit to start the day off right. Click here for more photos from the breakfast!

Indiana Receives Increased AmeriCorps State Funding INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 13, 2010) – The Office of Faith Based and Community initiatives today announced that seventeen organizations in Indiana will receive a total of $3,738,286 in AmeriCorps grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps programs in Indiana are administered on behalf of the Indiana Commission on Community Service and Volunteerism by the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI). The grants will support a total of 804 full and part time AmeriCorps members – an increase of more than 75 percent from last year – who will work to reduce poverty, increase health awareness, improve education, and assist with disaster readiness efforts in Indiana communities. For their service, members will become eligible for a variety of benefits, including a monetary award that may be used for education. In total, $1,761,137 in educational awards will be distributed to Indiana’s AmeriCorps members this year. “These additional funds coupled with the natural inclination of Hoosiers to give of themselves in times of need will provide the needed human capital that strengthens our social fabric,” state Isaac Randolph Jr., Executive Director of the Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives.
The first six years of life are critical to an individual’s future success. Research shows that 90% of the brain’s growth occurs before the age of six. Twenty-five percent of children entering Kindergarten do not have the foundational skills they need to be successful in school. Success By 6 programs and services ensure children six years or younger are receiving health and development programs that will help them get a good start in life. “Conservative estimates indicate that $1 spent on supporting young children can save up to $7 in future health and social service costs.” says Jennifer Wright, Success By 6 Coordinator for Northwest Indiana’s United Ways. “Healthy children build healthy communities. Everyone prospers from investing in children.” Wright was recently named the Northwest Indiana Success By 6 Coordinator. She grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana, obtained a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and education, spent ten years working for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Metro Denver & New York and six years with the Department of Children and Family Service’s emergency infant, toddler and child shelter care program in Palm Beach County, Florida. While working in Florida she obtained a Master’s degree in human services and is currently working [...]

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP | A luxury custom semitrailer followed by another long truck pulled onto the road behind the Porter County Fair grandstand Friday afternoon as a crowd of adults and children waited patiently for the door to open. It wasn’t the latest country music star or teen idol; it was nine Clydesdale horses who stood eighteen and nineteen hands tall (more than 6 feet at the shoulder) on hooves the size of dinner plates. Each weighs 1,800 to 2,300 pounds. “I think they’re pretty,” said Emily Engle, 4, of Lakes of the Four Seasons. The Express Clydesdales are owned by Robert Funk, who also owns the Express Employment Professionals franchise in Yukon, Okla. The horses, part of a group of 30, came courtesy of the franchise and local franchisees Jean and Jerry Phelps, who chair the United Way of Porter County fundraising campaign. They’ve been touring since 1998. “It’s great to be able to use the horses to raise money for causes and it’s a neat opportunity to bring the Clydesdales to a lot of people who haven’t seen a big horse before. It really draws a crowd,” said Josh Minshull, general manager of the Express Clydesdales. Minshull, who travels with his [...]

VALPARAISO | The “11 best days of summer” are officially over. The 160th Porter County Fair closed with a literal bang – a grandstand fireworks show Sunday evening. Fair organizers and participants reflected on their mostly positive memories of the 2010 fair. “This is one of the best fairs around,” said Julie Jones, who has sold tickets from the hut at the entrance gate for 12 years. “The people who organize the fair care about the people who come to the fair. They want them to enjoy the day.” Chris Birky, of Birky Family Farms, said he is “humbled” by diners who make a beeline for his homegrown pork sandwiches and old-fashioned root beer. “Our local people and 4-Hers are very supportive and that helps a lot,” Birky said. Birky said he’s always amazed at the number of people who contribute to the fair’s success. “There are a lot of people out there making great memories for a lot of families,” Birky said. Lasting memories were made by new 4-H champions and returning veterans. Fair manager Lonnie Steele said the 4-H livestock sale Thursday raised a record $305,000. “Even though the economy is bonkers, people in our community are recognizing the [...]
